There are many aspects to SEO from web copy to technical backend configurations. Here are just four of the SEO basics that every website should have if it wants to rank on the all-important first page of Google:

1. Sitemap

As the name suggests, a sitemap is a map of your site. It tells Google (and other search engines) the exact pages that are on your website so it can easily find the information people are searching for. This means you’ll appear higher in search rankings – win!

2. Connection and verification in the Google WebMaster Console Google WebMaster lets you chat with Google and adjust how it views your website. This is where you can show Google your sitemap, check on your Site Health to find any page errors, learn the keywords searched to find your website and their click through rate – and much more! All of this can help you better your site to ensure it appears at the top of search rankings.

3. Content that adds value to its target audience SEO and content go hand-in-hand. And Google wants to always be at the top of its game – which means your content always needs at the be at the top of its game too. Google wants to provide search results that are going to help their users and serve them the most relevant information. Therefore, your website content needs to always be fresh and up-to-date, and page copy needs to relate to the headings and keywords associated with it. Otherwise you can guarantee it’ll be pushed to the bottom of the rankings!

4. Backlinks

Backlinks are links to your website from other places on the web. If another page is linking back to your site, it’s essentially giving it credentials and telling Google (and other search engines) that your site is worth visiting. There are such things as bad links though – and Google will penalise your site for having these links. Your links need to come from a reputable source and be included on a page that contains information relating to your website.
